The video only contains complete long programs from Meno & Sand, Kovarikova & Novotny, Todd Eldredge, Elvis Stojko, Gritschuk & Platov, Lu Chen and Surya Bonaly with bits and pieces of long program from other medalists. Everybody's short program is totally chacked in favor of the beautiful sceneries of Birmingham. Okay, this kind of rip-off is expected and I am contented with what I have as long as I get some of the programs on tape. What would you expect from those videos anyway? But boy, are we in for a big surprise?! The music in every single program has been redone. When I mean redone, I don't just mean redoing the same piece of music for better sound quality. NBC has totally changed the musics of the programs! They sound entirely different from the originals except for the tempo to match the skaters' moves. For example, Eldredge is not skating to 'Gettysburg' anymore in the video, but to an unknown, boring piece similar in pace. I am clueless. Why would NBC do something like that? It's not even true sports documentary and fair to the consumers as far as I'm concern. My friend and I feel really cheated by NBC. She suggested that we should mail the video back to NBC for a refund. Do you think we can get any money back at all? My warning to everybody - Be extra careful next time when you want to buy any skating video from NBC Sports, you'll be surprised at what you'll get :-(. Yes, her= e we go: ...............PEG REVIEWS MAGIC MEMORIES ON ICE III ....................= .. REVIEW OF ABC SPORTS VIDEO: MAGIC MEMORIES ON ICE III An Unforgettable Season $19.95 US plus $3.95 P&H (U.S.) This video, from ABC Sports, recounts highlights of the '95 - '96 skating season, drawing from performances at '96 US Nationals, '96 European Championships, & '96 Worlds. Other events, while interesting, don't get mentioned because, obviously, they were aired by other networks. I like this tape. A lot. The superior presentation of skaters' programs' music is worth every cent of the cost of the tape. Although the package s= ays "hosted by," Jim McKay actually narrates the tape, and that's an importan= t distinction to make. He never appears on camera. He *is* using his melodramatic voice, which is often an irritating thing to behold, but he steers clear of the storybook mode he displayed during the original ABC coverage of the '96 World Championships in a singularly asinine profile o= f Michelle Kwan. (Horrible aural flashbacks of Jimbo saying "But the strang= e & scary times in which we live intruded..." and those references to "grown-= ups" spring to life in my head!) In fact, I never *once* felt the urge to hunt down Mr. McKay and slap him silly, which is the way his usually antiquate= d vocal mannerisms affect me. McKay's straightforward narrative is enhanced by the way the skaters' programs are presented: remixed in a way that improves musical quality, deletes almost *all* expert color commentary, and *blissfully* loses ever= y single factoid utterance of Terry Gannon. In fact, Terry Gannon does not exist. We get to hear Dick Button, Peggy Fleming, & Brian Boitano, and amazingly little of them. Usually, they keep some opening narration identifying the music & some program commentary. Always they excise the stupid comments & honest blunders that are inevitable during live telecas= ts. As always, I wish all performances could be complete. But at 83 minutes, = this tape is a good length, and the exerpts shown supported McKay's commentary well. I felt cheated a few times when my personal favorite programs were = only sampled, but that is because I am greedy and want it all; from the standp= oint of a writer, I can recognize the fine job done editing the tape, using precisely enough skating footage to get the narrative points across witho= ut wasting time on reiterating those points to the point of tedium. And ther= e are several programs presented in toto, with the nice sound and revised expert color commentary. I can live with all the editorial decisions. :-D The blow - by - blow details (you'd be disappointed in me if I failed to include these;-)...) : 0:00:30 - FBI Warning 0:00:36 - PSA from Partnership for a Drug-Free America 0:01:07 - Ad: Magic Memories on Ice 0:01:36 - Ad: Magic Memories on Ice II 0:02:07 - Ad: Gymnastics Greatest Stars 0:02:37 - MAGIC MEMORIES ON ICE III, An Unforgettable Season - intro 0:03:26 - 1996 US Figure Skating Championships (San Jose, California) 0:03:53 - Ladies event 0:04:00 - Background on Bobek (with *no* reference to "Nutcracker on Ice") 0:04:23 - Kwan backstory 0:05:03 - Bobek - clip of technical program (big band)- more story 0:05:30 - Kwan free skate (Salome) - big cut @ 0:06:37, ends 0:07:00 0:07:29 - Lipinski - free skate (Speed only; Prince of Tides not show= n (very end of program) 0:08:46 - Kwiatkowski - free skate (Tesh/Blade Runner/Tesh)(end of program) 0:10:31 - World team (podium) 0:10:49 - Ice Dancing event=20 (begins with story of "former friends, current rivals" as McKay details how the two dance teams traded titles back and forth every year = for the last few years ...with no reference to the citizenship petition confli= ct of '94) 0:11:51 - Roca & Sur - free dance exerpts (reference to heavy touring= ) 0:12:30 - Punsalan & Swallow - free dance exerpts (ref. to Jerod's injury) 0:13:05 - World team (podium) 0:13:16 - Pairs event 0:13:27 - Meno & Sand - partial free skate (incl. fall on throw) 0:14:50: - Ina & Dungjen - free skate (Slaughter on 10th Ave.) (beginning section only) 0:15:47 - World team (podium) (This is almost the only time you'll the a chance to see Lyons & Wells, so pay attention and enjoy it!)(no hearing Fish Called Wanda today) 0:16:05 - Men's event (again, *no* reference to "Nutcracker on Ice") 0:16:08 - Davis (Tango) - clips 0:16:11 - Eldredge - highlights of free skate (the sanitized explanation? Be aware that, since = it is offered by an American network, it places heavy emphasis on American skaters. Also, many good performances happened in the '95 - '96 season th= at ABC did not cover. Obviously, ABC does not include anything from another network's programming, so other season highlights - such a Josee Chouinar= d's tech program at the Champions Series finals, covered by FOX - do not make= it into the tape. Still, what's there is excellent. Respectfully submitted, Peg .......................
