Actually we take whatever the skater gives us (cassette, reel to reel, custom CD, mini CD, DAT) and copy it in one of three studios to a master DAT tape for the event. Adjust volume, tone, do noise reduction etc, to get them all as good as we can and so they all sound the same. We can also do speed changes if it is playing faster or slower than the skater is used to. All practice music is played from the studio at the main rink to the other rinks over FM radio quality phone lines. If you are at a practice session all music and announcements are actually coming from across town. It seems really strange playing a practice session when you can't see anything! This way the tapes never leave the room and it stays totally under our control. You don't have someone like Carlo Fassi getting into a fight with a local volunteer at a distant rink. If someone has a problem they will be talking to one of us that know the rules and procedures and have no problem saying No no matter who they are! ;-) (the person playing the tapes and the rink monitor at the rink are talking all through the practice using a phone with a headset.) Between the three recording stations and up to 4 or 5 practice rink systems all in one big room it looks like total chaos but is actually very organized. The USFSA owns all the equipment and it gets delivered in 24 large trunks. There are 7 official music people appointed and are officials just like any judge, accountant, or referee. One person is appointed chief of the crew. There are also about 40-50 local volunteers to do things like play all the practice music. The alternate appointments are just that, they get the position if the appointed person has to bow out. Including all the prep work and then the competition it takes a full two weeks and just like any other official we don't get paid anything. any other questions feel free to write :-) chip rauth chip@rosemount.com
