Morning Glories (1993)

Morning Glories (1993)

approximate size 81 x 88"

This quilt was inspired by a stained-glass panel by John La Farge which is in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. I used a combination of piecing, applique, machine embroidery, and hand-painted fabrics in making this quilt.

Here's some detail showing the applique work. The applique was done after the top was pieced but before the top was assembled with the batt and backing. My technique was to hand-baste the pieces in place and then machine-topstitch and pull out the basting. The thicker "stem" is bias tape, while I used a zig-zag stitch to embroider the stems for the leaves and flowers.
More detail.
In this section, you can see the outline quilting around the applique design.
