Pikes Peak Cog Railway photos

Photos taken on the Pikes Peak Cog Railway near Colorado Springs, June 1, 2007.

Here's a view looking up the tracks near the base of the mountain. My seat on the tram was right near the front so I was able to take photos out through the front windows.

Soon the peak comes into view ahead.

Here's another nice view as we climb through an aspen forest.

The tram climbs very steeply as it emerges above treeline. This shot out the side window of the train gives you some idea. The lack of an obvious fixed frame of reference here was making me feel a little dizzy and disoriented. I've never had any problems with altitude sickness, but I wasn't really expecting to suffer from motion sickness on the train, either. :-P

We waited at a siding for a few minutes for another train to come down from the summit.

The siding was "marmot city" -- there were several of them climbing around in the junk piles near the tracks. Unfortunately, none of my photos really turned out well.

Here's the last bit of climb to the summit.

We made it!

This is looking in a more northerly direction, looking down on the Catamount Lakes and highway 24 in the canyon beyond.

Here's another view from the top. I think this is on the south side.

Another shot looking generally southwards.

Looking west, I think -- those must be the Collegiate Peaks in the far distance on the horizon.
